HP and Sun Microsystems Put Solaris on HP ProLiant Servers

HP and Sun Microsystems announced an expanded multi-year partnership agreement that enables HP to distribute and provide software technical support for Sun’s Solaris 10 Operating System on the HP ProLiant server and blade system platforms. HP Thin Client Portfolio Now Certified for VMware View

HP announced that its entire line of thin clients is now certified for VMware View. The certification, which covers the Microsoft Windows CE, Windows XP Embedded and Linux operating systems, includes rigorous testing and quality assurance with VMware View for enhanced reliability and ease of deployment. HP is now offering Linux thin clients certified for VMware View Manager, an enterprise desktop management server that enables IT administrators to provision and control user access. Additionally, HP has claimed it is the only vendor to receive View Manager certification for Windows CE.

HP launched a home server designed for use with both Windows and Mac computers Monday. Based on the Microsoft Windows Home Server platform, the HP MediaSmart Server ex485/ex487 is a central repository for automatically backing up and accessing digital music, videos, photos and documents from multiple computers on a home network. According to HP, the MediaSmart Server automatically organizes files across all PCs, streams media across a home network and the Internet, and publishes photos to popular social networking and photo sharing sites.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, announced today that its 32 gigabyte (GB) and 64 GB solid state drives (SSDs) have been selected, after extensive testing, for use in the HP ProLiant BL495c virtualization blade server. HP is about to put out a novel 1GHz Celeron laptop it calls a mobile thin client, its first, apparently the result of its acquisition of Neoware. Wyse, the other remaining thin client maven, beat HP, now the market leader, to the punch a few months ago and added two more models the other day looking much like HP's. HP's thing, which starts at $725, has no drive or fan or any moving parts at all; it's thoroughly solid-state including the 1GB flash module.

See, HP is open sourcing widgetry very much like theirs, widgetry that it developed for itself over the last seven years at the cost of 'millions of dollars,' it says, and 60 man-years work that sorts out the various licenses that govern open source software - imagine, there are 1,700 licenses in OpenOffice alone - and lets you know if said licenses have been tinkered with in any way. It calls it FOSSology and has made it available at FOSSology.org under the GPLv2. It's designed, it says, to address the acquisition, tracking and licensing of FOSS. It can detect code reuse and provenance even if the code has been changed.
